A firewood rack is an essential piece of furniture, whether you have an outdoor fire pit or an indoor wood-burning stove or fireplace. Whether your firewood rack is indoors or outdoors, it serves the same basic purpose: keeping your firewood neat, orderly, and in the best condition possible. However, the difference between indoor and outdoor firewood racks lies mostly in their size and design.

Outdoor firewood racks tend to be much less ornate than their indoor firewood racks. As a result of this, outdoor racks tend to be much plainer, but also sturdier. They also are typically of a larger size, because your backyard is much bigger than your living room. An indoor firewood rack, which is sometimes referred to as a log rack, is typically much smaller than an outdoor rack. It will sit on the firewood hearth and usually can only hold a few logs. Because the indoor rack is part of your living room’s décor, they are much more attractive than outdoor racks, but at the cost of functionality. Don’t count on your log rack to be too sturdy; so be sure not to overload it.

Firewood racks are an excellent and convenient way to store your firewood. They keep your wood organized, safe, and dry by allowing you to stack it off the ground. One of the most important things to decide is how big of a firewood rack you need. If you get one that is too small, your rack will no longer be convenient. However, if you purchase a firewood rack that is too large for your needs, it is both wasteful and unattractive. For these reasons, it is essential that you buy a firewood rack that is the proper size for your firewood usage.
Begin by determining how much firewood you go through on a regular basis. If you’re anything like me, you go through a small bundle of wood from the grocery store in no time, so a larger-sized wood rack saves me unnecessary trips to the store. A good rule of thumb is to buy a firewood rack which can hold all the wood you will use in one week.
Pre-made firewood racks normally are made in sizes that correspond to the unit measurements in which firewood is sold, such as a cord. Typical sizes in which you might find a firewood rack is quarter cord, half cord and full cord sizes, although many companies will also offer smaller sizes or sizes such as a three-quarters cord. Find the size that best lines up with your weekly firewood usage, and that’s probably the best rack for you. It’s also important to make sure that the firewood rack you choose will fit in the space you have for it.
